The primary safety concern with implantation of cells from a non-human origin is triggering an immune response to the foreign cells. However, cartilage is an immuno-privileged tissue, meaning that its cells are isolated from the blood and lymph systems thus minimizing the chance for immune response.

Cartimove© has been verified not to contain alpha-Gal sugar moieties (the main porcine immunogenic residue).

In animal studies performed in monkeys, which have a human-like immune system, no clinical response to the Cartimonve implant was recorded. In addition, alpha-Gal immune response was within tolerable limits and declined after a few weeks, supporting the enveloping of the porcine cells by the matrix.
